From the President’s desk....
Dear SCRC Members,
We are so enthralled to be able to boast the second largest membership for a local KSRA council in the state! Thank you so much for your commitment to literacy, the profession of education, and your students. South Central Reading Council is full of talented, dedicated educators who have joined us this year to learn about new and notable fiction and non-fiction children's and young adult literature at the Martin Library in the fall. Through your membership dues and event attendance, we were able to make a very generous donation of $1000 to the library. These are your membership and event dollars hard at work, going back into your community, especially when many school and local library budgets are being reduced. Thank you!
Many SCRC members traveled up to the Debbie Diller "Literacy Centers" breakfast in the Harrisburg area. I was so encouraged to hear the other local councils sharing how impressed they were with the turnout the event had from SCRC. You can read a great synopsis of the event in this newsletter written by our President-Elect, Jami Smith. My own Assistant Superintendent and one Title I elementary principal attended the event and were quite impressed with the ideas and how directly applicable and relevant Diller's ideas were for best practice in the classroom.
We have one more event planned for this year that is sure to be just as exciting and applicable to our teaching activities: Poetry Mentor Texts with Rose Cappelli and Lynne Dorfman on April 30 - a dinner at the Valencia Ballroom. Details are included within this newsletter. Additionally, thanks to the efforts of our community service chair, Emily Reed, we have participated in two events in the community, sharing the word with local families about the importance of literacy. We have also continued, again thanks to your membership and donations of books, our Laundromat Baskets of Books.
But... I'm sure you were wondering when I would get to my point. Did you ever wonder how these events got planned? Did you ever wonder who comes up with the ideas for these events? Well, I'm writing to share with you that YOU could be someone who helps us make these decisions. Please consider this a "personal" invitation to join us for one of our meetings. The next meeting is held going to be held on March 5th, at 5 p.m., at Isaac's in West York. We eat, we talk, we share our vision for literacy in York and Adams counties. No commitment required. But the way that I first got involved with SCRC was that I was invited by Julie Wise to attend a meeting. Then I attended another one (we only have about 4-5 per year). Then I attended an event. By then I caught the SCRC "bug." I wanted to get more involved because I believe in what we are doing. I am excited to discuss who we will get for event speakers. I share ideas about the "local talent" I had discovered. I want to get my ideas out there - to see them come to fruition. You have great ideas and excellent opinions. Would you please join us to share what you are thinking, to help SCRC (and KSRA) become more relevant to teachers' and your classroom life? We will be friendly and welcoming, and extremely grateful for your voice. No strings attached - just gratitude for your time and thoughts.
Thank you for your consideration.
Yours in Literacy,
Aileen
