Newsletter - Winter 2015
From the President's Desk
As we settle into a new calendar year and we all begin looking ahead at everything we need to accomplish between now and the end of the school year, I challenge you to find new ways to motivate and engage your students as readers. By this point in the school year, we are all feeling comfortable and complacent and every day seems very monotonous as we buckle down to begin getting our students ready for state testing. As educators, we sometimes lose perspective and think we are the only ones feeling like we are overwhelmed and in a mid-year slump. However, our students are often feeling the same way and need us to breathe new light into the school year. The new calendar year is a great time to provide students with the opportunity to reflect on their reading progress and have them set goals for the second half of the school year. Talk about what they are doing well and what areas they still need to improve upon. Make reading resolutions, so they have new goals to challenge and reengage them in becoming independent readers who find joy in reading again.
Yours in Literacy,
Council President

Fall/Winter Online Book Study Continues:
Grammar Matters: Lessons, Tips and Conversations Using Mentor Texts K-6
Our on-line book chat about Grammar Matters, gearing up to our February 7 event with author's Lynne Dorfman and Diane Dougherty is going strong. It's not too late to join. You can still read the book or only parts of the book and post your comments at http://scrcpa.weebly.com/forum. You can answer the questions that are there, or respond to someone who has already posted and earn an hour of Act 48 credit for each part of the book (or only the parts you post about). Our last post will be about Part IV and take place on January 31. Check us out to see how easy and fun on-line learning can be!
Find us at http://scrcpa.weebly.com/ and on our SCRC Facebook page. A guiding question(s) will be posted to the website and Facebook by the date listed above. Participants just need to share their thoughts about what they read. They can post their own questions as well! Act 48 credit will be awarded for this book study.
