Newsletter - Fall 2014
From the President's Desk
The 2014-2015 school is underway and one constant still remains in education: change! As educators, we all enter this profession to change the lives of the students that enter our classrooms and have a lasting impact that leads every student towards literacy and becoming a life-long learner. To this end, we will continue to offer high quality, literacy-focused professional development to our area teachers. You will find information about this year’s opportunities contained within this newsletter.
As a council, we believe it is important to have a greater impact on our community, as well. Literacy begins in our homes, on the laps of parents, at an early age. It is our mission to make books available to those who may not have access and be a resource to families who are not sure where to begin through our events and our community service projects. You can find details about community-focused events and community service initiatives within this newsletter. We hope you join us in partnering with our families.
Yours in Literacy,
Council President

SCRC Community Service Outreach
A Library for children in need
This year, SCRC will be donating funds towards an International Project, to help purchase books for a school and orphanage in Ayacucho, Peru. The Gethsemane Learning Center and the el Hogar de Ninos Case Luz orphanage had been promised a library by another organization, and the organization never followed through. SCRC has sent funds to Vision Trust in Peru who will then be purchasing books to begin their library.
Summer Library event – partnered with York County library
On July 12, SCRC gathered at Codorus State Park to celebrate literacy. The York County library system was hosting its summer reading club “Spark in the Park” program. All York County libraries were represented along with South Central Reading council, allowing children the opportunity to create crafts and perform science activities.
Since Llama Llama was there in his red pajamas, children came to SCRC’s table to make a llama craft. Children had an enjoyable time spinning yarn around a llama frame to create their own llama before hearing his story read aloud.
Reading Rainbow event- partnered with York County Library
On Saturday, October 11th from 11-3 at York College, members of SCRC celebrated literacy during the York County libraries Reading Rainbow event. Author Joe Kulka read his books to children as other organizations set-up a craft or activity based on one of his books. SCRC’s activity was based on “Wolf’s Coming”, a suspenseful and fun book all about a visit by Wolf. Since the book is filled with rhyme and birthday celebrations, children opened a present to reveal a word. They then completed a rhyme activity based on that rhyme.
Government Relations
On September 13, the GRC committee met and were given a presentation on the PA Comprehensive Literacy Plan by Cindy Anderson. She covered Guiding Principles, Essential Elements, Implementing the Plan, and Analysis and Assessment Plan.
The committee would like representatives to be familiar with the Literacy Plan in order to benefit their own instruction. They also feel it would be beneficial to spread the word within the council and districts represented.
See the website for more information and for a copy of the plan.

Membership
Membership update: As of the end of August, SCRC has 131 members. We are currently the second largest council in the state. What an awesome way to show York County's dedication to literacy! We are only behind by 7 members, so consider encouraging a colleague or two to join. In addition to receiving publications from KSRA, being a member of SCRC also allows for a discount on events during the year. Be on the lookout this school year for a non-member who you could recommend for the Celebrate Literacy Award in the spring. If they win the award, they would receive a free membership. Happy Teaching!
