SCRC welcomes back Lynne Dorfman and Rose Cappelli for our Spring event! They will be presenting the ideas from their latest book Poetry Mentor Texts. During this event, Lynne and Rose will be showing teachers how to use poems in both reading and writing workshops and across content areas. Their activities are hands-on, interactive, and engaging, and will allow you to regain a love of teaching poetry, and encourage your students to love reading and writing poetry too. There is a place for the study of poetry in the PA Core Standards. Please join us for this inspirational event!
Highlight: Literacy Resources
It can be overwhelming to look for literacy resources that are research based, current, and valid. We have two suggestions for you to use to help you navigate all the information available out there! These websites are also excellent for giving parents resources to help work with their children at home, and to help parents understand instructional practices and current issues in education today!
Highlight: Literacy Resources
www.readingrockets.org Reading Rockets has an extensive library of reading topics, including information on teaching reading, struggling readers, children’s books and authors, and Common Core resources for teachers. There are also tip sheets and information sheets for parents in the area of literacy, as well as for Common Core information.
www.edutopia.org Edutopia is devoted to what works in education. This website also is an excellent resource for research based instructional strategies and topics in education. There are blogs, newsletters, and classroom videos to help you see these strategies in action. The topics are current and relevant to education today!
You can also follow both of these resources on Facebook and Twitter.
Region IV Event Recap: Literacy Workstations and Making the Most of Small Groups with Debbie Diller
On Saturday, November 16, 2013, South Central Reading Council, along with the Lancaster-Lebanon Reading Council and Capital Reading Council, hosted an event at the Clarion in New Cumberland with Debbie Diller as the keynote speaker. Debbie shared her more than 35 years of experience with attendees and her knowledge of how to effectively and efficiently use every minute in the classroom in order to improve every student’s literacy skills. In particular, she shared valuable information from her books, Making the Most of Small Groups and Literacy Work Stations, Those who attended had the opportunity to purchase her books and put Debbie’s techniques to work quickly in their own classrooms.
We would like to thank the Lancaster-Lebanon Reading Council and Capital Reading Council for hosting this event with us! It was very well received and full of many great ideas that provided a refreshing perspective for every classroom.

For the second year, SCRC will be participating in the Love2Learn event sponsored by the United Way of York.
The event was scheduled for Saturday, February 15 at Franks Theater in York, but due to the weather, it will be rescheduled soon!
The purpose of this event is to inform the community of the significance of quality education and the tremendous impact the youngest years have on a child’s entire life.
SCRC will have an activity called "Where's the Heart". A heart will be hidden underneath red cups. Each cup is labeled with a letter or word. Depending on the age of the child, they will identify the letter or word to try and locate the hidden "heart".
SCRC hopes to provide a fun activity for many children and their families, while showing the importance of basic literacy skills.
Membership
Thank you to all SCRC members—we are at a total of 129 members as of the end of December 2013! We are always looking to add more members and encourage members to be active in SCRC, so please invite a friend to join! Also consider having dinner with us at one of our meetings to get to know us and maybe even accept a vacant board position yourself. **Remember that the new teacher evaluations include a section on involvement in professional organizations!
